Germany has become the latest country to issue a travel advisory for Barbados because of the ongoing sewage mess.
“On the south coast of Barbados between Hastings and St Lawrence, there is currently a problem due to heavy flooding from untreated sewage,” a German Foreign Ministry statement said.
“Travellers should avoid this area and especially the beaches there and follow the instructions of the local authorities,” the statement continued.
The leaks, which began sporadically, have reached crisis levels.
Earlier this month the Barbados Water Authority’s (BWA) Waste Water Division (WWD) started dye testing on the first of four proposed injection wells, designed to allow the discharge of pre-treated sewage deep underground, so remedial work can be carried out on the south coast sewerage network.
