A 43-year-old freighter, who allegedly assaulted his wife, has been granted $2,000 bail.
Christopher Lloyd Yearwood, of St Stephens Hill, Black Rock, St Michael, is accused of committing the act against Heerawattie Yearwood yesterday, occasioning her actual bodily harm.
He pleaded not guilty to the offence when he appeared before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant today.
However, the prosecutor requested that Yearwood be kept in custody as he was in breach of conditions of a previous court order.
But with tears in her eyes, Yearwood’s wife, who was also in the No. 2 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court, said she unwilling to have her husband remanded to prison, despite telling the magistrate that he had “threatened me with a Collins [sword] . . . and chucked me”.
The husband vehemently denied the accusation.
“I have not touched Mrs Yearwood. You come here and say that I grabble you, slap you? I quarrel yes . . . and you sending me to jail? Thank you very much Mrs Yearwood . . . . If I have to go up I will because as soon as I leave here, I done with you.
“You just want to destroy me, but I am not taking it anymore. You sending me to jail? That is not the life for me!” an emotional Yearwood declared.
After hearing both sides, Cuffy-Sargeant granted Yearwood his freedom, at least for the time being, while warning both parties to keep the peace and to be on good behaviour until the case is adjudicated.
