The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) is seeking to forge closer ties between the Caribbean and Latin America.
During a working meeting here last week with Argentina’s resident ambassador Gustavo Martinez Pandiani, CDB President Warren Smith underscored the importance of regional cooperation.
He explained that the CDB, as a regional financial institution, was currently transitioning from being an exclusive bank of the Anglophone Caribbean, to a more inclusive one.
As strong evidence of this, Smith pointed to the incorporation of Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and Mexico as full members of the CDB. He also spoke of the imminent memberships of Cuba and the Dominican Republic, adding that the Bank was interested in incorporating the Argentine Republic in the near future.
During the meeting, Smith, who was accompanied by the CDB’s Vice President of Operations Monica La Bennett and Corporate Vice President Yvette Lemonias Seale, formalized an invitation to the ambassador to represent the Argentine Republic as an observer country at the 48th Annual Meeting of the CDB Board of Governors in Grenada from May 30 to 31.
Since 2014, Argentina has been represented at CDB meetings.
Ambassador Martinez also extended an invitation to the CDB to participate in a Bridgetown workshop to be hosted by his government from April 24 to 25 , which will zero in on the agro-industry, SMEs, and the teaching of Spanish language.
Smith indicated the willingness of the Bank to participate in the event, while stressing the importance of the issues identified to the region.
