On a rather warm Sunday afternoon the members of the Bridgetown District Scout Council assembled at the Whitepark Wesleyan Holiness Church for their Annual District Church Service and Parade.
Actually, the parade stepped off from the Westbury Primary School with boys, Leaders and parents proudly marching en route to the church service, where everyone sang to their hearts delight.
Engaging the willing and youthful congregation, Canon Austin Carrington, Chaplain and the Vice Chairman of the Bridgetown District Scout Executive, spoke of God’s eternal character and His request for persons to be engaged in all spheres of wholesome work. He encouraged the Scouts to be vigilant as they avoid the negative traits such as bullying and inculcate the virtues such as patience, loyalty and kindness.
Making reference to the birth of Scouting, the preacher thanked God for the life and insight of the founder of the Scout Movement, Lord Robert Baden-Powell, that having committed himself to the value of the youth, his dream and reality still lives on.
Remarks were given by the District Commissioner, Anthony Archer, who thanked the officers and the minister of the church for allowing the District the use of the church for the service. He also thanked the parents and guardians of the boys present for allowing them to be part of such a vibrant worldwide body.
He reminded the congregation that one of the aims of Scouting was to assist in the improvement of society and encouraged full participation from the adults present in the area of leadership, while complimenting his District Leaders for their excellent work in guiding and moulding their Scouts.
In his remarks, the Chief Commissioner Dr. Nigel Taylor opened the eyes of those present to the longevity of the national association. He pointed out that Barbados had remained stable over the years in part due to the involvement of the leaders and parents.
He recognised the long serving leaders in the Association and congratulated them for their hard work. After the service, the Chief Commissioner took the salute as the parade marched to the point of dismissal.
