We all want to have a normal life, one void of any discomfort or unhappiness. Unfortunately we live in a world where true perfection does not exist and where we can’t always have what we want. All we can do is work with what we have and make the best of it. For example, illnesses whether terminal or curable, always have a substantial effect on an individuals life.
The existence of asthma has plagued this world for generations. Asthma, which is medically defined as a disease characterised by recurrent attacks of breathlessness and wheezing, has made lives of many individuals a challenging one.
It is caused by the inflammation of the air passages in the lungs and affects the sensitivity of the nerve endings in the airways so they become easily irritated. Asthma does not discriminate and as a result affects all age groups. However, the college-age student is usually the ones that suffer the most.
As a student you lead a very hectic lifestyle. Usually between school, extra curricular activities and part time jobs you hardly have anytime for yourself. Your life is filled with long days and short sleepless nights and you are just constantly wondering where all the time goes.
However, besides this already busy schedule, the impact of having a non communicable disease such as asthma does not make the situation any easier. Having to be restricted and very decisive in the activities you participate in, the environments you frequent, and even more the foods you eat can frustrate anyone. Students with asthma must be very mindful of their surroundings as the slightest thing could be the cause of an asthma flare up — from shellfish to dust or even strenuous exercising.
Keeping abreast of your diet and environment can aid in you discovering what contributes to an “act up” of your asthma. Striking a balance is very important with asthma, whether you are a mild or severe sufferer. But remember, asthma is not the end of the world.
