Worth a laugh

After word spread of Apple’s victory in court over Samsung, a rather interesting and quite funny story started to surface about Samsung paying Apple their awarded $1 billion in the legal tender form of five cent coins. As the story goes, more than 30 trucks filled with five cent coins arrived at Apple’s headquarters in California. It also went on to state that the security company that protects the facility said the trucks were in the wrong place, but minutes later, Tim Cook (Apple CEO) received a call from Samsung CEO explaining that they will pay $1 billion dollars for the fine recently ruled against the South Korean company in this way.

This story however, is just a hoax. First of all, at the end of the story on the website Paperblog.com, one of the first websites to carry to story, there’s a little notation which says “You didn’t think this could be real right? But hey! You loved it!”, indicating that it is in fact false. Other reason stems from the fact that Samsung has vowed to fight this decision until the end and thus wouldn’t be shelling out $1 billion just days after the ruling.

The last factor comes from simple math, $1 billion dollars in five cent pieces works out to be 20 billion five cents pieces, and with an average weight of 5g each, that’s a whopping 220,462,262.18 pounds, that would take a lot more than just over 30 trucks to transport, and one could only guess as to what would be the cost of transporting all those five cents. But besides all of that, it does make for a very funny read and a good laugh.
