Magistrate Douglas Frederick, presiding in the District ‘A’ Magistrates Court, took this decision after the convicted man’s grandmother, Mary Cameron-John, said her grandson has a serious drug problem and she wanted help for him.
Nathaniel Jeremiah Jean-Claude Grant pleaded guilty to entering his grandmother’s home between the December 25 and 28, 2015 and making off with items worth $359. The
25-year-old, who is unemployed, also has no fixed place of abode.
Besides the underwear, Grant stole rum, bathroom and toilet cleaner, shampoo and conditioner. The complainant found the items missing after she returned home from work.
“He is my grandson and I love him. But he has a drug problem and I would like to know if you can take him to Verdun House for me please,” she pleaded with Magistrate Frederick.
He explained to her that Grant first had to be assessed by the Hospital, after which Verdun House would interview him to see if he was a suitable candidate for their rehabilitation programme.
Grant will return to court on February 12.
