Zakiya Worrell receives her award from Prince Edward
Six Barbadians can now add the Duke Of Edinburgh’s Gold Award to their other accomplishments to their belt.
Honoured yesterday evening at Government House, the awardees were presented with their certificates by the Earl of Wessex Prince Edward in a ceremony, witnessed by Governor General, Sir Elliott Belgrave.
The recipients are Kimberley Benjamin, Nya Greenidge, Fabian Norville, Jamar Odwin, Chloe Walker and Zakiya Worrell.
In praising the awardees, Prince Edward said that it was heartening to see that the Duke Of Edinburgh Awards programme was “alive and well”, especially since it was the 50th anniversary after the awards were introduced in Barbados.
He also informed attendees that the programme was beginning to expand and grow in Barbados as more young people were showing an interest in joining the movement.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, is presented to persons in the Commonwealth between the ages of 14 and 25 who make outstanding contributions in a particular public pursuit.
It is divided into three levels: gold, silver and bronze. To obtain an award, participants must demonstrate excellence in a number of areas, including service, skills, physical recreation and expeditions. (BGIS)
