The new diagnosis of any illness could be daunting for children, especially if it is chronic. However, at the Diabetes Association of Barbados’ Camp Pride, the children were provided with the tools to manage their illness — in a fun environment.
The annual one week camp which completed its 12th year last week, after starting in 2002, caters to children from six to 16 years of age and was held at Springer Memorial School, Government Hill, St. Michael.
President of the association, Noreen Merritt, said that the children participated in various activities over the week, including the well received zumba sessions, martial arts and a “staycation” at the Divi Southwinds Beach Resort.
She also shared a story about a camper who told her that being in a room filled with other diabetics actually made her feel normal and Merritt said that this small situation spoke volumes about the continuation of such a programme.
