Students and teachers at the Wilkie Cumberbatch Primary School took a virtual journey to southern Africa on Wednesday, as Black History Month culminated.
The theme of the school’s celebration was Simudzai Mureza wedu We Zimbabwe in keeping with the country’s national anthem. Translated into English it means, Blessed be the land of Zimbabwe.
Organizer Shadia Holder-Dash explained that after entering the Mr & Mrs Africa Primary School Competition and placing third with their depiction of Zimbabwe, the school decided to carry forward the theme into their African Awareness Day.
“So the culture, the history, the symbols, all of Zimbabwe we have brought over to the school,” Holder-Dash said, while stressing the importance of having the students learn about their African heritage.
“They know that our skin is black, but they do not understand the struggles black people went through to get us where we are today,” she said.
Dressed in their African attire, some of the students competed in a talent show in which Kyla Brathwaite performed Hey Black Girl ; Sarena Eversley assisted her mother in a demonstration of how to prepare a Zimbabwean dish and Tyrese Clarke did a piece entitled, Unplugged.
