While Crop-Over Festival activities are dominating the local calendar, Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy has reminded Barbados through a weekend activity, that the island has a lot more to offer. It came when he got a first hand look at the caving experience the Barbados Garrison Historical Consortium is planning to open to the public.
The minister, who visited George Washington House with a Chinese delegation over the weekend, got the chance to tour the tunnels first hand, which the group noted two years ago would be opened as part of the tourism package for the area.
The tunnels, located approximately 15 feet below ground, are believed to have been used during slavery, and at the time of exploration by the group, about 1,000 feet of the caves had been uncovered, with much left to explore.
The minister’s tour was conducted Vice President of the Consortium, Peter Stephens, and member, James Blades. Maybe next year a cave tour will be on the Crop-Over calender. (LB)
