Smiles were the order of the day last Saturday, when approximately 100 children with disabilities were treated to a special day on the grounds of Ilaro Court.

The annual event, labelled Special Day for Special Children, was hosted by the Junior Chamber International Barbados – and received high praises from Minister of Social Care, Steve Blackett.

The Minister noted that the beaming faces of the children was “testimony to the positive impact this initiative has on them”, and saluted the Jaycees for their “dedication, drive and commitment to support the cause of the vulnerable children in Barbados.”

The fun-filled initiative catered to children of all ages from various schools and organisations across the island, and featured activities such as horse-back riding, face-painting, a puppet show and live performances. Minister Blackett alluded to a number of programmes and services for persons with disabilities which were established through his Ministry, but pointed out that collaboration with other entities was welcomed, in order to assist the vulnerable persons in society.

“…Governance and the private sector cannot do it alone. We must therefore, make a concerted effort to include in a meaningful way civil society and non-governmental organisations in our government structure. I am convinced that we must commence the discourse to find a suitable framework to include such entities to play a greater role in Barbados’ social sector,” the Social Care Minister asserted. (BGIS)
