The normally peaceful and quaint village of Alexandria in St Lucy was sent into a state of panic last night after two of their own were 
brutally attacked.

Public relations officer of the Royal Barbados Police Force, Inspector David Welch, confirmed that around midnight last night 35–year–old Nicole Hinds and her boyfriend were wounded when two assailants reportedly attempted to rob the couple in their home. Hinds received numerous stabs about her body and had to be hospitalised, while her boyfriend was slightly injured.

Welch said that officers caught one of the attackers, who was also injured. However, they were still on the hunt for the other.

Today, residents in the northern village were still in disbelief that such an incident could happen in their village.

Bently Coulthrust and his wife Tessa live mere feet away from the injured couple and they told Barbados TODAY since the attack they are worried that they will not be able to sleep properly in their own home.

Bently, who was born and raised in Alexandria, said it was the first time in all his years that such a thing had ever happened there and he felt really bad.
He said the couple were new to the district and last night would have been their first night sleeping in the house.

“We just met she; she is a nice . . . girl. She only move in there last night . . . . They clean out the house last week and they only move in last night for the first,” the visibly shocked man said.

The Coulthrusts said that though the incident took place next door they did not realize something was amiss until they heard their dogs barking relentlessly. Then, they awoke to the sights and sounds of emergency personnel outside their house.

Tessa further told Barbados TODAY: “We was sleeping we didn’t know nothing was going on, it was the dogs that alert us. You know when dogs keep barking, keep barking – we got two sensible dogs. Now I feel [nervous] and shaky; that is the honest truth ’cause I ain’t get much sleep. It got me shocked. I still can’t believe that happen out here.

“I live here nearly 25 years and I never experience nothing like that. Out here is a peaceful place and I never experienced nothing so. It had me jittery and nervous because I ain’t accustomed to it.

“Out here is a quiet area and it never had that kind of commotion, never, never, never. But you know everything is for the first but I hope there won’t be a second or a third and keep on – I hope not. You know how it is, you sleeping and you wake up and you just see fire truck and police and ambulance outside your door? Twenty-five years and nothing so ever happen in Alexandria,” she lamented.

Farther in Alexandria many residents told Barbados TODAY that they were unaware of the incident occurring at all. An aging district with fewer than 50 households residents said they hoped that this was an isolated incident.

One man, who identified himself only “Dan”, said that in spite of where such an attack took place, people would have some apprehension that the event could lead to more crime but he was optimistic this would not be the case in Alexandria.

“I don’t really believe that might be a crime motivated to get money, something don’t sound right,” he said.

“Thieves that would break in houses, unless they are foolish people, come up with the situation in their mind to come out with something that is worth the crime but if you go in a little house with two people in it –– that ain’t sound right.

“What of real value are you gonna get? That just ain’t sound right,” he said.
