The Sagicor Globeathon 2014 raised approximately $65,000 this year – $8,000 more than in 2013.

And team captain of Globeathon Barbados, Dr Vikash Chatrani, reported to the media this afternoon during a thank you ceremony at Sagicor, Collymore Rock, that the initiative had not only raised money but also awareness of below-the-belt cancers.

“We are very happy with the funds raised for this worthy cause but most of all we are flabbergasted with the awareness that we got through a tremendous outpouring of people supporting this iniative,” he said.

“Not only are we able to increase this awareness but we can tackle this problem by raising funds for cancer services at QEH. It is definitely a win-win situation and with Sagicor partnering with us we couldn’t ask for more,” said Dr Chatrani.

Meanwhile, Sagicor’s assistant vice president, marketing, Tracey Knight-Lloyd, said the increase in participants this year was a testament to the hard work put in by the Barbados Cancer Society and the Globeathon Barbados team.

She said it also showed that Barbadians were sitting up and taking notice of the reason behind the activity.

“But most of all it is heartening to know that with a simple step we made a world of difference in the life of Barbadian women living with or affected by below-the-belt cancers,” she said.

Knight-Lloyd also pointed out that Sagicor was proud that it could play a greater role though title sponsorship this year, with 100 staff and their family participating.
