Gollop mum on NUPW criticisms

Chairman of the Employment Rights Tribunal (ERT) Hal Gollop, QC, has refused to be drawn into a debate with the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) about the Tribunal’s effectiveness.

NUPW President Akanni McDowall last week slammed the industrial relations dispute settlement body as “a pappy show” and “ineffective”, hinting that the union would consider no longer attending its sittings.

McDowall was upset over a decision by the Tribunal to delay a ruling on the case it brought on behalf of retrenched workers of the National Conservation Commission until a similar case brought by the Barbados Workers Union was heard.

Asked for a response to McDowall’s comment, the senior counsel would have none of it.

“Count me out of that. I am not commenting,” was all Gollop told Barbados TODAY.

McDowall had previously said he did not understand the connection between the two cases, arguing it was impossible to determine that both cases were similar until the facts of the BWU case were heard.
