Barbadians can now receive information on what Government is doing via Facebook and Twitter, and this would soon be joined by Short Messaging Systems, SMS, for emergency alerts.
Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Senator Darcy Boyce, who holds responsibility for telecommunications, made the announcement yesterday during the launch of the Government Information Service’s Facebook page and Twitter chat site.
“Disseminating information via social media can also result in greater efficiencies in some areas,” Boyce said.
He added, “I envisage GIS social media becoming an integral part of the information system during a hurricane season, and during a national emergency or disaster situation. Indeed I see that work in emergency management being closely tied in with a what we are planning in telecommunications, to use SMS messaging systems on the phones to be able to communicate with people during emergency situations”.
In addition to the start of its Facebook and Twitter tools, GIS also re-launched its website.
