Parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of Education, Senator Harcourt Husbands has placed the blame for errant children, including those who bully others, squarely on the shoulders of parents.
Husbands made the assertion yesterday at the launch of a one-month anti-bullying programme for children being held under the theme, No to Bullying, yes to love.
“Whatever the issue . . . they say we at the ministry are not doing enough. Yes, the teachers may not be doing enough, but whenever they get to the meat of the issue they always identify the issue of parenting as being the most important, the key element, in either causing the problems that our young people face or helping to resolve them,” he said.
The parliamentary secretary later added, “The officials at the Ministry of Education said to me there are too many children who don’t have limits. They can do as they please, come and go as they please, they get whatever they demand…that is why sometimes at night we see so many young people on the streets.”
The anti-bullying initiative is organised by the management of Sheraton Mall in collaboration with Supreme Counseling for Personal Development with support coming from Barbados TODAY and a number other businesses.
