Leigh Sandiford and Jaydn Gill captured the Massy United Insurance Under-12 and Under-8 chess titles respectively when the competition came to an end last weekend.
Sandiford, the reigning Under-12 CARIFTA champion, was the class act of the 46-man field among the Under-12’s, emphatically cruising to victory by winning all six of his matches.
Going into the final round last Saturday, Sandiford held a half point lead over Azariah Johnson, who sat in second on four and a half points.
Victory for Johnson would have given her the title, but despite a valiant effort, she was unable to end Sandiford’s unbeaten run.
Azari Gittens finished second on the tiebreak ahead of Aaron Haynes and Tyson Holder who all ended on five points. Johnson finished fifth.
Sandiford will be joining Under-16 CARIFTA champion Yu Tien Poon and the Under-20 Carifta champ Orlando Husbands in Colombia over the coming week as they carry the national flag at the 2015 Pan American Youth Chess Championships.
