Ten students are today better equipped for the upcoming school term.
As part of First Legal Attorneys’ inaugural back to school initiative, the students were presented with uniforms, shoes, stationery, art supplies, money for school fees and other incidentals.
And Minister of Education Ronald Jones has advised them, and others, not to squander the gifts given and to utilise every opportunity to its fullest.
Referring to the gift of “free” education, Jones said there were some children who would leave home on mornings but do not go to school.
“Therefore, I am going to urge all of you to go to school. The Government provides a lot of resources through taxes for you to go to school and . . . we don’t want any of you to catch real hell so go to school and learn well.”
Affirming his Government’s continued commitment to grant students free passage on all Transport Board buses, he said consideration was being given to implementing a cut-off time for free bus rides in order to eliminate time wasting.
“. . . Because we don’t want the situation to continue where some students board a bus, get off, take another one, get off; that is foolishness. We want you to board the bus and go straight to school. Get to school before the bell rings. You don’t have any sheep to carry out, you don’t have any yards to sweep, you don’t have any clothes to wash, any wares to wash up, so all you have to do is get up, take your breakfast . . . go to school,” Jones stated.
Ona Harewood, the principal attorney responsible for the back to school initiative, said First Legal Attorneys hoped to help a larger number of children, both at the primary and secondary level, when the programme continues. She said the initiative was born out of a direct effort to assist several clients who had been laid off or had their work hours cut and were facing financial difficulty.
“All of them have children [so] we heard them and we understood their concerns. We hope that these small gifts will help to offset the students’ expenses,” Harewood said.
