Canes strewn over the highway causing a stand-still in traffic.
Driver Juan Small and her 17-year-old assistant were thanking their lucky stars today after escaping unhurt when the bin of their truck broke loose and overturned at the Everton Weekes Roundabout just after 1 p.m.
Small, who has been contracted by the Barbados Agricultural Management Company for the past six years to transport sugar cane from Carrington to Portsvale Sugar Factory, recalled hearing a loud noise and feeling the bin tilting when she went around the roundabout.
“The truck went one side and then drop back down. When I looked out the cane was on the ground,” she said.
Small was sure that speed was not a factor in the accident.
“You can’t come around no roundabout speeding,” she said in response to a question.
An eyewitness, who did not want to be identified, agreed that the vehicle was not speeding at the time.
The accident caused long delays in traffic on the busy highway which eased after the cane was loaded onto another truck.
