Chelsea get much needed win

LONDON –– Jose Mourinho saw his Chelsea side snatch a much-needed 2-1 win against Dynamo Kiev tonight to strengthen their hopes of reaching the Champions League last 16.

At a nervy Stamford Bridge, Chelsea led when Dynamo defender Aleksandr Dragovic headed Willian’s cross into his net.

Willian (left) of Chelsea is challenged by Vitorino Antunes of Dynamo Kiev. The Brazilian would later score the winner.

Dynamo improved after the break and were rewarded in the final 15 minutes when Dragovic fired in the equaliser. But Willian’s sublime curling free-kick earned the Blues only their second win in eight matches.

The victory moves Mourinho’s side above their Ukrainian opponents into second place in Group G. The Blues are three points adrift of leaders Porto, who won 3-1 against Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Chelsea go to Israeli side Maccabi in their penultimate match, rounding off the group stage by hosting Mourinho’s former club Porto.

Arsenal now face a tough task to qualify from their Champions League Group F after being outclassed 5-1 by Bayern Munich.

The Gunners suffered a torrid first half as Robert Lewandowski’s header, Thomas Muller’s snapshot and David Alaba’s strike put the hosts 3-0 up.

Arjen Robben’s first-time finish and a Muller breakaway strike came either side of Olivier Giroud’s volley.

Arsenal are bottom of the group and six points behind Bayern and second-placed Olympiakos with two games remaining.

The Greek side’s 2-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb, achieved via a 90th-minute winner, means that qualification is out of Arsenal’s hands.

Mesut Ozil had a goal ruled out for handball when the score was 1-0 and Arsene Wenger’s team improved after the break.

But Bayern’s relentless pressing and ability to pounce on defensive errors exposed the visitors, who lost for a third time in four Champions League group games and equalled their heaviest defeat in the competition.

Centre-back Laurent Koscielny suffered a hip injury hours before kick-off and his replacement, Gabriel, was partly at fault for two of Bayern’s three first-half goals.

And with a groin injury to right-back Hector Bellerin, the Gunners now have 10 players on the injury list.

Meanwhile Barcelona are on the verge of qualifying for the last 16 after beating BATE Borisov 3-0 at the Nou Camp tonight.

The holders had few problems seeing off the challenge of the Belarusian champions, with Neymar scoring a brace either side of half-time, including opening the scoring with a penalty after half an hour.

Fellow South American Luis Suarez then doubled the Catalans’ lead with a well-taken goal on the hour-mark after being set up by Neymar, before the Uruguay forward then repaid the favour by creating Neymar’s second seven minutes from time.

Other scores today: AA Gent 1, Valencia 0; Zenit St Petersburg 2, Lyon 0; Roma 3, Bayer Leverkusen 2.
