The 2014 Commonwealth Games Baton arrived at the Grantley Adams International Airport on a LIAT flight from Guyana around 5 p.m. for the Barbados segment of the Queen’s Baton Relay.
Amid the usual attendant security procedures a number of Barbadian and British officials were present at the airport for the official welcome. The contingent included representatives from the Barbados Olympic Association Inc. (BOA) led by president Steve Stoute, the British High Commissioner to Barbados Victoria Dean, the Royal Commonwealth Society chairperson, Dame Maizie Barker-Welch, and UNICEF representative Violet Speek-Warnery.
According to a release from the BOA, the official handover ceremony of the baton takes place tomorrow at Government House where it will be delivered to the Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave. This will mark the start of two days of activities where the baton will be taken around the island making stops at specific schools, landmarks and places of interest.
Tomorrow a a baton relay will culminate with a stop at the BOA’s Wildey, St Michael headquarters. A number of schoolchildren are expected to line the route taken by the baton starting from Government House.
