Barbados’ top two sprinters, Ramon Gittens and Levi Cadogan have advanced to tomorrow’s semifinals of the men’s 100 metres at the IAAF World Championships currently underway in Beijing, China.
Gittens, 28, fresh from a silver medal performance at the Pan American Games last month, clocked 10.02 seconds to finish second in his heat and advance to the semifinal stage.
The 19-year-old Cadogan qualified on time after finishing fourth in his heat in a time of 10.12 seconds.
Gittens has been drawn in the same heat as Olympic champion, Usain Bolt.
Bolt eased home in a time 9.96 seconds, while American Justin Gatlin had the fastest qualifying time of 9.83 seconds.
The news wasn’t so good for Akela Jones though, who dropped to 18th position in the women’s heptathlon after sub par showings in both the high jump and 200 metre events.
She cleared just 1.80 metres in the high jump, way below her season’s best of 1.91, while her time of 24.70 seconds in the 200 was also more than a second off her best time for that event.
Jones currently has 3701 points, way behind England’s duo of Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who lead the pack with 4005 and 3 925 points, respectively.
