The Barbados Karate Association recently celebrated their 40th Anniversary at their annual dinner and awards ceremony held at Queen’s College. The BKA actually reached this milestone in 2012.†President of the International Karate Daigaku, David Clarke LVO, delivered the feature address to more than 100 members of the association.
Clarke spoke on the history of the BKA as one of its founding members, reminisced on his younger years representing Barbados as part of the kumite (sparring) team and expressed his pride at the younger members carrying on the tradition of excellence, having won gold in Canada in 2012 and therefore redeeming the team that narrowly missed the opportunity at gold when they took part some years ago.
A number of students received special awards including Cameron King who was adjudged to be the most outstanding karateka at national and international level. King has won the individual kumite at regional, Pan American and world championship levels. He has been a leading member of the Barbados team for almost 10 years before moving out of the adult category and into the senior category which he dominated in his first year.
The BKA has been led by Paul Bernstein who has been elected as the president of the association by its members for the past 28 years.
More than 20 black belts were recognised for their service of 25 years and over.
During the evening, the Queen’s College Karate Club and the Barbados Shotokan Karate Club took the opportunity to present awards to their club members.
