Barbados might be going green.

But not St. Matthew’s Primary. Well, athletically speaking.

Today at the school’s annual sports day at the Friendship, St Michael playing field, Orange House ended the six-year reign of Green House, tallying 610 1/2 points to Green House’s 581 1/2. Purple House took cellar position with 508 points.

It was an all-round effort from the Orange House athletes on a day when the victor and victorix ludorum came from the other houses. The honour of victor ludorum went to Green House’s Koby Waithe who tallied 37 points, gained from wins in the Under-13 100m and long jump, as well as second place in the 200m and 400m. He was also part of the relay team that crossed the finish line in third place.

Purple House’s Nya Gittens-Dawson emerged as victrix ludorum after accumulating 50 points. She copped first place in the long jump to add to second positions in the cricket ball throw, novelty race, 80m, 100m and 150m. Gittens-Dawson, who competed in the Under-11 Division, was also part of the 4x 100m relay squad that finished in second spot.

Orange House had their star performers as well, with Tatyanna St. Hill and Kwame Patton standing out. St. Hill contributed 38 points to her house’s efforts with first place finishes in the 80m, 100m and the 150m. Patton collected 35 points after winning the 100m and finishing third in the 400m and second in the cricket  ball throw.

Physical education teacher Julian Pierre told Barbados TODAY he was very satisfied with the performances of the young athletes during the day. He added they had gone through an elimination process prior to today’s sports day and this had contributed to the very competitive nature of the meet.

Pierre noted that over the previous years Green House had been winning the sports by more than 100 points and it was a testimony to the sterling efforts of the youngsters in Orange House that they had been able to turn that around. He said there were a few mishaps such as a dropped baton and an injury, without which,  the results between the top two houses might have been even closer.
